Proximity keys are small fobs which allow a keyless ignition and entry system. The fob communicates through radio waves with the vehicle to unlock and lock doors, and start the engine once within an acceptable rage. It was back in 1998 when Mercedes-Benz first introduced the system. Proximity keys are called different names, including keyless access, intelligent key, keyless entry, push button start, keyless go, smart key, and push-to-start.

The proximity keys allow car owners to keep their key fob in their purse or pocket every time they lock, unlock, and start their vehicle. The key is being identified through one of the different antennae in the bodywork of a car, as well as a radio pulse generator found in the key housing. Cars with a smart key system also got a mechanical key backup, often in the form of spare key blade that comes with the vehicle. In general, the hole of the key is hidden behind the cover plate for the purpose of aesthetics.

Cars with proximity key system can easily disengage the immobilizer then activate the ignition with no need to insert the key inside the ignition as long as the drive got the key in the car. On majority of vehicles, it can be done through pressing the starter button or even twisting the ignition switch. Also, there are vehicles which come with a special ignition slot for a proximity slot.
